SSB Outing!

Finally, a long awaited SSB outing!! It's been so long since I last saw Elva. We met at Punggol MRT to explore the area. As Elva and me didn't eat breakfast (I forgot that Mom had cooked fried rice in the cooker, so I thought there was nothing to eat, except cake; besides, if I ate, I would be late), we decided to take LRT to Punggol Point, or Punggol Plaza (we alighted at the 3rd station, can't remember the name).

I wrote the above paragraph yesterday. Wanted to finish uploading the pictures to facebook then continue updating this blog last night. But who knows, the photos took so long to finish uploading, and I can only upload 5 photos at a time. Ended up sleeping at 5am. But anyway, I'm here to finish this post up, after a whole day of procrastination (haha). *Opens FB album and looks at photos*

We went to Punggol Plaza to eat lunch. There was this set lunch at 日本村, so we went in. And it made us so full, or was it just me? Ate teriyaki chicken (again) and mochi, with fried prawn, sashimi and some kind of seashells (maybe I'll be able to identify them once I take LSM1103 next sem) on a satay stick. The sashimi is so RAW. Haha, I know it's supposed to be like that, but I don't like raw food. Taste like raw jelly (-.-). It costs $10.50 and left me 90 cents in my wallet. Cos I was in a hurry so anyhow grab a 10-dollar note.

After that we went to explore the Punggol area. It was raining! A good thing I was wearing shorts and slippers, and my "raincoat" shirt (not that it made a difference, it looks like a raincoat but doesn't function like one). We relied on Elva's map and walked to some nursery and a sports hub of some sort. It was an on-and-off rain, suddenly it rained heavily; suddenly it gt smaller; suddenly it stops, and the cycle repeats. We saw some Punggol Billard place next to the sports hub and went there. There was a prawning place, the waters looked like Coke. After that we went to the Riverside Promenade, or something like that, to stroll and take pictures. Quite a nice view! Elva took the most pictures, if she had a better camera than her iPhone she would be snapping non-stop. It rained again and we went to a cool-looking toilet to take shelter. It looked like some rock wall.

And then, we crossed a bridge to get to Lorong Halus Wetland. It sounds like a swampy area to me, so I was surprised when I don't see any swamp-like area around. Probably only the "coasts" of the Serangoon river looked like swamps to me. Anyway, it was like another world in Lorong Halus. The sky there was blue with white clouds, in contrast to the dark and gloomy ones that hung over Punggol, that threatened to rain every now and then. We found a nice pavillion with no benches, as if it were built for people to have a picnic. We settled down and brought out the plastic sheet Wei Ke brought along to use as a mat. We ate, chat and took pictures, digital and polaroid. Haha. We were fooled by the polaroid. We thought the cover was a fil and waited for the picture to develop. And I ruined the next by shaking the photo. Sorry :( (There was this lizard/bird that keeps making chirping noises. Rahh!)

After that, we went to walk around the place and saw what were known as "reed beds". There were dogs there! Big ones, little ones, all wild ones. Along the way, there were many ponds with fishes, lily pads and lily flowers. The beauties of nature. (Except that a few fighter planes decide to fly past during our picnic and it was deafening.) The word "leachate" keeps popping up, which makes us wonder what it means. And the reed beds were lined with rocks, with the reeds being planted in an orderly manner. What's with the rocks? We finally got our answers when we were back at the entrance where we started. Lorong Halus used to be a landfill site, where trucks would dump rubbish into big holes dug in the ground and they would be buried and left to degrade (or not). When it rains, the water would pass through the waste buried under the soil and seep into the nearby Serangoon Reservoir, which would pollute the reservoir's water. Thus, there was a need to treat the water, known as leachate, before it enters the reservoirs.

Above: A picture that I took, of one of the exhibition boards, for illustration purposes.

It turns out that the leachate flows beneath the reed beds and the reeds absorb and remove the impurities from the leachate. The ponds we saw were also known as polishing ponds, which contains the treated water (I think).

Disclaimer: The above information is from my understanding from the exhibition boards at Lorong Halus. It may not be entirely correct, I may have intepreted it wrongly. Please don't use it as reference material or anything. Use Google instead.

After we left Lorong Halus, we went to our final destination: Waterway park@ Punggol (or something along that line). We walked towards the Serangoon East Dam, but it was supposedly blocked off and I keep feeling spider webs on me. It looked like the area around were still under construction, so we headed back. Anyway, we might not be allowed entry into the dam :/

After that we strolled along the waterway, in hope of finding an exit. However, there doesn't seem to be one in the vicinity. We ended up walking 3 LRT stations to finally exit near Damai LRT. Good lord, my legs were breaking and I was wearing slippers. The excited Elva stopped to take pictures every now and then. The night was getting dark and it was about 7.30pm going to 8. Along the way, we saw a bridge that looks like a Christmas bridge and a shelter that looks like the shell of a clam. And not to forget the up-and-down road full of humps, that looks like we are on a roller coaster, except that we are walking instead of sitting in a car. I remembered feeling quite lonely and sad at some point of time. It must be scary walking alone at night. Thank goodness I have my two friends with me. There were also bikers and joggers occassionally biking or running past us.

At the exit, we were informed by an informational board that the Waterway was 4.2km long. Good lord, I think we walked that entire distance, if not, close to that, considering we started way before we got to the Waterway (I don't really know where it starts and ends, since there were no signs to say"Start/End of Waterway"). The path along the Waterway continues, but we decided not to go further since it was dark and headed out on the path towards the housing estates, and civilisation (Lorong Halus really felt like we were out of Singapore).

Finally, we concluded this "exploration" trip after walking for an entire day and parted ways; Wei Ke and Elva were going to take bus (lucky them for living so near to Punggol), while I went to take MRT and transfer bus :( Haiz, Punggol is really far for me. And that's the end of this SSB outing, after months of not seeing each other. Haha, I've met Wei Ke in school before, and I think I haven't seen Elva for..... One year?!?! Haha, anyway, photos can be found at:

Another long post, sorry for being long-winded. Tomorrow there is NDP YPC BBQ. Haha, all acronyms. After that, it will be guitar camp next week. What a happening life!
Till the next update! :D
